Warranties & Climate Information

Understanding how Ontario's climate affects exterior finishes — and what we do to protect your investment.

Navigating Ontario's Climate: The Reality of Exterior Stains & Paints

At STAINandPAINT.ca, we pride ourselves on being leaders in delivering long-lasting, beautiful finishes. We use premium-grade materials and industry-leading preparation and application techniques to ensure your outdoor structures look exceptional.

However, even the highest-quality professional finishes face a formidable opponent: the Ontario climate.

While many product manufacturers claim a 3-to-5-year warranty on exterior paints and stains, these generalized guidelines rarely account for the extreme, rapid environmental shifts unique to our province. From freezing, snow-laden winters to scorching, humid summers, outdoor wood structures in Ontario are under constant environmental stress.

To help you protect your investment, we've broken down how our local climate impacts exterior finishes and what you can do to maximize the longevity and beauty of your fence, deck, or outdoor structure.

The Core Culprits of Premature Wear

Understanding what causes fading, peeling, and premature wear can help you identify issues before they require major remediation.

1. Thermal Expansion and Contraction

Ontario experiences dramatic temperature swings — often shifting by over 30°C between seasons, and sometimes dropping or spiking rapidly within a single 24-hour period. Because wood is a natural, porous material, it expands when it is warm and contracts when it freezes. This constant, aggressive movement puts immense physical stress on any paint or stain layer, which can eventually lead to microscopic cracking and subsequent peeling.

2. Radical Humidity Shifts & Moisture Cycling

Our seasons cycle between intense summer humidity and dry winter air. Wood continually absorbs airborne moisture and then dries out. If a vertical surface like a fence remains damp for extended periods, the moisture trapped inside the wood will attempt to escape as the sun heats it up, literally pushing the paint or stain film away from the surface and causing it to bubble or peel.

3. Road Salt and Chemical Exposure

Fences built adjacent to sidewalks, driveways, or roadways face an additional hazard: winter road salt. Slush and salt spray from foot traffic, vehicles, or snowblowers inevitably land on the lower sections of fences. The chemical composition of de-icing salt aggressively breaks down the chemical bonds of exterior coatings, leading to accelerated peeling and discoloration near the base of the structure.

4. The Sun vs. Shade Dilemma

Finding the right environmental balance plays a massive role in how your finish ages:

  • Too Much Direct Sun:Constant UV exposure acts like bleach, baking the surface, drying out the natural oils in the wood, and causing premature fading and micro-cracking.
  • Too Much Dense Shade:Areas that never see sunlight trap moisture, creating the perfect breeding ground for mold, mildew, and rot, which degrades the finish from the outside in.

An ideal balance of roughly 50% sun and 50% shade gives surfaces the opportunity to dry efficiently without suffering from extreme UV exhaustion.

Proactive Homeowner Maintenance

While STAINandPAINT.ca provides the ultimate foundation for a durable finish, ongoing environmental exposure means a little extra homeowner care is required to beat the elements. You can significantly increase the lifespan of your coating by following these best practices:

Clear Snow and Ice Immediately

Do not allow snowdrifts or ice chunks to sit piled up against your fence, deck, or vertical wood structures. Keeping these surfaces clear prevents prolonged moisture contact and minimizes water pooling.

Create an "Air Buffer" with Foliage

Keep trees, bushes, vines, and dense garden foliage trimmed back at least a few inches from your fences and decks. Improved airflow allows the wood to dry quickly after a rainstorm, drastically reducing the risk of mold and mildew growth.

Rinse Away Spring Salt

In the early spring, gently wash down the base of fences near sidewalks or driveways with clean water to rinse away accumulated winter salt residue before the summer heat bakes it into the wood.

Our Commitment to You

At STAINandPAINT.ca, we do everything humanly and technically possible to provide a flawless, enduring finish. However, because we cannot control the severity of Ontario's winters, humidity spikes, or local environmental conditions, we cannot be held responsible for every natural wear-and-tear issue that arises from our harsh climate.

With that said, our clients are our top priority. We view our projects as a partnership in preserving your property. If you ever notice premature wear, have questions about how your structure is aging, or need advice on maintenance, please reach out to us. We are always willing to work closely with our clients to keep their properties looking beautiful for as long as possible.

Our Limited Warranty Program: Honest, Proven Protection

At STAINandPAINT.ca, we believe a warranty should be built on honesty, clear expectations, and mutual trust. We don't make unrealistic promises that ignore the reality of Ontario's environment. Instead, we offer a transparent, tiered warranty system that balances product capability with our elite surface preparation standards — giving you peace of mind that both we and our primary supplier, Sherwin-Williams, stand behind.

Standard Coverage

Tier 1: The Standard 1-Year Limited Warranty

Included automatically with all standard exterior staining and painting contracts.

Our standard 1-year warranty is designed to ensure that the initial application, adhesion, and coating thickness are absolutely consistent and free of workmanship defects.

What It Covers

Severe cracking, flaking, bubbling, or peeling resulting directly from workmanship flaws or coating inconsistencies.

What It Excludes

  • Normal fading, shifting, or discoloration caused by UV sun exposure.
  • Minor cosmetic weathering or micro-checking (the natural aging and minor splitting of exterior wood).
  • Any peeling, flaking, or rot caused by winter road salts, chemical de-icers, or mechanical damage (e.g., snowblower impact, lawnmowers).
  • Surfaces constantly exposed to excessive dampness due to untrimmed plants, heavy foliage, trees, or structural shade that promotes constant mold growth.
  • Damage caused by automatic lawn sprinkler systems repeatedly blasting the finished surface.

Premium Coverage

Tier 2: The Premium 3-Year Limited Warranty

Available upon request. This option requires upgraded premium products and our intensive, multi-step surface restoration process. Additional charges apply.

Older wood structures and heavy-weather areas require an exhaustive preparation process to ensure the coating can deeply bond with the wood pores. This tier is for homeowners who want maximum longevity.

Our Intensive Prep & Application Process

01

Deep Chemical Cleaning

Application of specialized Sherwin-Williams wood cleaners and mold removers to neutralize graying wood fibers, mildew, and deeply embedded spores.

02

Calibrated Pressure Washing

Utilizing a professional 1200 PSI pressure washing system to flush away contaminants without gouging or fraying the delicate wood grain.

03

Strict Drying Protocols

Allowing the structure adequate time to reach a safe, dry moisture equilibrium before any coating is introduced.

04

Fiber-Opening Sanding

Hand or machine sanding the wood using an aggressive 80-grit+ sandpaper. This removes "mill glaze" (the glossy layer left by lumber mills) and opens the wood pores, allowing the premium stain or paint to absorb deeply and properly.

05

Inter-Coat Sanding (Optional / Finer Finishes)

For an ultra-smooth, premium aesthetic, a light sanding with a finer grit between coats can be performed to optimize inter-coat adhesion and eliminate a rough texture.

What It Covers

Complete film failure (widespread peeling, blistering, or flaking) for a full 36 months from the date of completion.

What It Excludes

The same environmental, foliage, sprinkler, and road-salt exclusions outlined in our Tier 1 warranty apply.

Important Terms, Exclusions & Conditions

To maintain an honest and trustworthy relationship, our warranties are strictly subject to the following conditions:

Non-Transferable Coverage

This warranty is granted exclusively to the original purchaser named on the contract and invoice. It is non-transferable and does not extend to subsequent property owners if the home is sold.

Natural Wood Characteristics

STAINandPAINT.ca is not liable for naturally occurring wood behaviors. This includes tannin bleed-through, knot discoloration, or sap/pitch bleeding, which are natural features of certain wood species (like cedar) and not a failure of the coating.

Hydrostatic Moisture Pressures

We cannot be held responsible for moisture blistering or peeling caused by hydrostatic pressure — where invisible underground moisture travels upward through the bottom of fence posts or structural framing from wet, oversaturated soil.

Environmental Adjustments

Because we cannot control Ontario's brutal sub-zero winters, extreme humidity cycles, or localized soil shifts, STAINandPAINT.ca cannot be held liable for premature wear caused entirely by harsh climate factors or structural movement.

Warranty Partnership

We view a beautiful finish as a partnership. Homeowners must make a reasonable effort to keep decks and the bases of fences clear of piled snow and ice, and keep peripheral foliage trimmed back to ensure proper airflow.

Remedy Limitation

In the rare event of a validated warranty claim, STAINandPAINT.ca will supply the necessary labor and materials to repair only the specific affected areas where the workmanship failure occurred, not the entire structure.

Material Failures

Our warranty covers our professional workmanship. Any catastrophic material or chemical defect within the product itself will be handled in tandem with the manufacturer's product warranty.
