Warranties & Climate Information

1. Thermal Expansion and Contraction

Ontario experiences dramatic temperature swings — often shifting by over 30°C between seasons, and sometimes dropping or spiking rapidly within a single 24-hour period. Because wood is a natural, porous material, it expands when it is warm and contracts when it freezes. This constant, aggressive movement puts immense physical stress on any paint or stain layer, which can eventually lead to microscopic cracking and subsequent peeling.

2. Radical Humidity Shifts & Moisture Cycling

Our seasons cycle between intense summer humidity and dry winter air. Wood continually absorbs airborne moisture and then dries out. If a vertical surface like a fence remains damp for extended periods, the moisture trapped inside the wood will attempt to escape as the sun heats it up, literally pushing the paint or stain film away from the surface and causing it to bubble or peel.

3. Road Salt and Chemical Exposure

Fences built adjacent to sidewalks, driveways, or roadways face an additional hazard: winter road salt. Slush and salt spray from foot traffic, vehicles, or snowblowers inevitably land on the lower sections of fences. The chemical composition of de-icing salt aggressively breaks down the chemical bonds of exterior coatings, leading to accelerated peeling and discoloration near the base of the structure.

4. The Sun vs. Shade Dilemma

Finding the right environmental balance plays a massive role in how your finish ages:

• Too Much Direct Sun:Constant UV exposure acts like bleach, baking the surface, drying out the natural oils in the wood, and causing premature fading and micro-cracking.
• Too Much Dense Shade:Areas that never see sunlight trap moisture, creating the perfect breeding ground for mold, mildew, and rot, which degrades the finish from the outside in.

An ideal balance of roughly 50% sun and 50% shade gives surfaces the opportunity to dry efficiently without suffering from extreme UV exhaustion.

Non-Transferable Coverage

This warranty is granted exclusively to the original purchaser named on the contract and invoice. It is non-transferable and does not extend to subsequent property owners if the home is sold.

Natural Wood Characteristics

STAINandPAINT.ca is not liable for naturally occurring wood behaviors. This includes tannin bleed-through, knot discoloration, or sap/pitch bleeding, which are natural features of certain wood species (like cedar) and not a failure of the coating.

Hydrostatic Moisture Pressures

We cannot be held responsible for moisture blistering or peeling caused by hydrostatic pressure — where invisible underground moisture travels upward through the bottom of fence posts or structural framing from wet, oversaturated soil.

Environmental Adjustments

Because we cannot control Ontario's brutal sub-zero winters, extreme humidity cycles, or localized soil shifts, STAINandPAINT.ca cannot be held liable for premature wear caused entirely by harsh climate factors or structural movement.

Warranty Partnership

We view a beautiful finish as a partnership. Homeowners must make a reasonable effort to keep decks and the bases of fences clear of piled snow and ice, and keep peripheral foliage trimmed back to ensure proper airflow.

Remedy Limitation

In the rare event of a validated warranty claim, STAINandPAINT.ca will supply the necessary labor and materials to repair only the specific affected areas where the workmanship failure occurred, not the entire structure.

Material Failures

Our warranty covers our professional workmanship. Any catastrophic material or chemical defect within the product itself will be handled in tandem with the manufacturer's product warranty.
